About The Project

Eco Vita developed and implemented exclusionary methods while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

Eco Vita oversaw the biological monitoring of 19 abandoned mine shafts in Lander County, NV. These abandoned mines provide roosting habitats for approximately 23 species of bats. To ensure the protection of these species, Eco Vita adhered to the Project Abandoned Mine Lands Closure Plan, which was adapted from Bat Conservation International’s guidelines on managing abandoned mines for bats.

Given the inherent dangers of entering historic mines, Eco Vita utilized external evaluations and exclusion methods to minimize risks. Our biologists installed nylon mesh netting over mine openings, allowing bats to exit but discouraging their return. This method encourages bats to find alternative roosts, thereby reducing the risk of harm to both the bats and the survey team.

To monitor bat activity, our team employed a variety of observational techniques, including visual observations, acoustic monitoring, and thermal imaging. Thermal imaging cameras were particularly useful in mines documented to have significant bat habitats, as they allowed for non-intrusive monitoring of bat populations. These comprehensive methods ensured that Eco Vita could effectively manage and protect bat populations while adhering to safety protocols.
